Stopping You losing your screws.

This might be an obvious one but if you are trying to get the movement screwed back into a clock case and it is a deep case you can either magnetise your screwdriver which works great with steel screws or with brass screws just put a little blob of Rodico on the head of the screw and then push the blade of the screwdriver through it and into the slot and it wont fall off.

Hey Paul great idea, I had been using masking tape wrapped on the tip of the screwdrive sticky side out until I found these split end screw holding screwdrivers at a garage sale for a couple a bucks.

Wow! What a great idea. I have never seen those before. Keep your eye out for more William, I bought some file handles at a boot sale today but they are useless for holding screws ;)

Those split bladed screwdrivers are real popular with electricans and should be easily found at any good hardware store at a reasonable price. They use them for exactly the same reason. Get screw started then switch to another driver to tighten up.

Thanks for that Charles, I visit a lot of shops but have yet to see them in this country, I will have to look more closely!

If you can't find them in shop I know they can be found in Grainger online. Just search screw-holding screwdriver under hand tools. I think they even have a set of three different lengths for about $30.00. Several people make them. I think the one pictured in this topic is a klein. I got one I use from friend at work. Very handy for all sorts of jobs around the house as well.

I have looked on the UK e-bay site and also on-line tool stores and there is nothing listed, will have to get some from the US if I want some. :(

I checked the US ebay site and they have several listed. One guy has an ebay store selling them listed as "KLEIN TOOLS K28 3/16" Slotted Screw-Holding Screwdriver". Maybe the klein k28 model # may help. Think he was selling it for about $7.50 of course international shipping would probably be more than the tool itself.

Please put Charles advice about switching to another screwdriver once the screw is started right there with "remove the pendulum before you move a clock". I was an electrician for many years and every time I got lazy and tried to snug up a screw with a wedge-type holding screwdriver I destroyed it. We were pretty cavalier with tools the company bought! The screwdrivers can't be fixed once they are "sprung". Like many things that work well, they are far more sophisticated than they appear at first glance. I looked for one in my tool box today and can't believe I couldn't find any. I used to have several. I had to use forceps to start the screws to put my completed Sessions movement in its case. I have often been accused of having a loose screw (or was that a screw loose....?), by the nice lady who lives here anyway.
